All Meade telescopes, microscopes and accessories are warranted by Meade Instruments Corp. (MIC) to be free of defects in materials and workmanship for a period of ONE YEAR from date of original retail purchase in the U.S.A. MIC will repair or replace the product, or part thereof, found upon inspection by MIC to be defective, provided the defective part or product is returned to MIC, freight prepaid, with proof of purchase. This warranty applies to the original purchaser only and is non-transferable. Meade products purchased outside North America are not included in this warranty, but are covered under separate warranties issued by Meade International Distributors.
The LX200 RS232 port is indeed a serial port, even though the RJ-11 phone connection is the same one that is used for telephones and modems. The computer end of your 6-wire phone cord should not be connected to the internal modem port of the G3. The serial number 816399 is likely from 1988 or 1989. I have a registry of old Meade LX telescopes (and the 2080/2120's before the LX), and I have noticed that.

Q: What if I modify my Meade product in some way - does this void the warranty?
Answer:
The simple answer is yes. As with virtually all companies, this has always been our policy and will remain our policy. Notwithstanding, Meade Instruments prides itself on customer service and trying to find a fair and equitable solution to every problem. If, upon inspection of any Meade product, we find that the product failed due to a defect in materials or workmanship within the warranty period (and all other requirements relating to the warranty are satisfied (i.e., original purchaser, proof of purchase, etc.)), and such failure, in our opinion, was not due to the modification(s), then we will repair or replace the defective product, or part thereof, in accordance with the warranty.
In addition, if a Meade product has been modified, and such modification, in our opinion, contributed in some way to the product's failure, then we will make every reasonable effort to work with the customer, on a case by case basis, to resolve the problem for a reasonable fee.
